Real Madrid ‘won’t throw in the towel’

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa took responsibility for the damaging defeat at home to Getafe but says his side remain in the hunt for La Liga.

A superb strike from Martin Satriano gave the visitors a famous 1-0 win on a night where the Bernabeu crowd jeered and booed the Real players and board.

Real are now four points behind Barcelona in the race for the title but Arbeloa – who replaced Xabi Alonso in January – says they will fight on.

“There are 36 points left to play for and our only goal is to get them,” Arbeloa said.

“Nobody’s going to throw in the towel. It’s a gap we think we can close. It’s Real Madrid, and nobody’s going to give up.

“There were several chances where we deserved a goal. And football isn’t about deserving. We knew the kind of game we were facing. And for me, that’s the takeaway.

“I know things look very bleak; there’s not much hope when you lose like this. But we have a very difficult match in Vigo. But I won’t criticise my players’ effort. Is it my responsibility? Of course it is.

“I know that if anyone is responsible for the defeat, it’s me, and I accept that.”

Real Madrid had won 18 of their previous 20 LaLiga matches at the Bernabéu but this was a damaging second league defeat in a row for Arbeloa.

The former Liverpool full-back won his first five league matches in a row but is now under pressure despite progressing to the last 16 of the Champions League.
