Barcelona were looking to build on the feelgood factor generated by their Champions League thrashing of Newcastle four days earlier when they hosted Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
The Catalans cruised past the Premier League side 8-3 on aggregate after a 7-2 success at Camp Nou.
Hansi Flick’s side had won six and drawn one of their previous seven games in all competitions and started four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
Rayo also progressed in Europe, despite losing 1-0 at home to Turkish side Samsunspor in the Conference League. Their 3-1 victory in the first leg was enough for them to advance to the quarter-finals.
They had also been in good form domestically, arriving on the back of a six-game unbeaten run.
