Gabriel pulls out of Brazil squad to become sixth Arsenal player ruled out of international duty

The Gunners were beaten by title rivals Manchester City in the EFL Cup final on Sunday

Defender Gabriel has been forced to pull out of the Brazil squad, becoming the sixth Arsenal player to be ruled out of international duty.

The Brazil Football Federation said that Gabriel will miss the team’s upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia, which will take place in the United States, because of “pain in his right knee”.

It comes after the Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Premier League title rivals Manchester City in the final of the EFL Cup on Sunday.

Nico O’Reilly scored a second half brace to give City the win and deny Mikel Arteta’s side the chance of a quadruple season.

Gabriel played the full 90 minutes at Wembley Stadium but now joins fellow centre-back William Saliba – who also featured in the final – on the injury list.

Saliba has withdrawn from the France squad, with Les Bleus also travelling to the US for their friendly matches against Brazil and Colombia.

England midfielder Eberechi Eze was called up to Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan but subsequently withdrew with a calf problem.

Eze missed the final after suffering a knock in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League last-16 second leg.

Leandro Trossard has been forced out of the Belgium squad for their matches against the USA and Mexico because of an injury issue, while club captain Martin Odegaard was already ruled out of Norway duty because of a knee injury.

Dutch defender Jurrien Timber also misses out through injury.

The Gunners are hoping to win their first top-flight title for more than two decades this term.

Arteta’s men lead second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand, by nine points.

Arsenal return to action on 4 April when they take on Southampton in the FA Cup last eight before the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting three days later.

They resume their league campaign on 11 April when they host Bournemouth at the Emirates.
